Fighting for Downriver.
Jaime cares about you.
Dear Neighbor,
I'm Jaime Churches, and I'm running to be your State Representative for Michigan's 27th House District. The district includes Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Trenton, Riverview, Wyandotte, and part of Southgate. The general election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
Before taking office, I taught fifth grade Downriver for 10 years. I completed my student teaching in Gibraltar schools before beginning my career in the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District, where I taught for six years. I then had the opportunity to teach for four years in Grosse Ile Township Schools, the district from which I graduated. I also served as vice president of my local Michigan Education Association chapter.
I grew up Downriver and attended Woodhaven-Brownstown and Grosse Ile public schools. I'm inspired to serve the community that raised me. I'm the daughter of a nurse and a businessman and the sister of an autoworker. I understand many of the challenges facing our community because I've lived them.
For me, politics is personal. As a teacher, I want to promote a culture that supports public education and ensures educators feel valued and respected for the hard work they do every day for our children.
Legislation has the power to affect our businesses, classrooms, health care systems, environment, and, most importantly, the people of Downriver. I will continue prioritizing working families while making politics and public policy more accessible. We must ensure that working families receive the support and opportunities they deserve to get ahead. From affordable child care and universal free pre-K and young fives programs to lower auto insurance costs, we can do important work in Lansing to support Downriver families.
Since taking office in January 2023, I have had the honor of serving Downriver and delivering meaningful results for our communities. Some of our accomplishments include:
Securing $20 million for repairs to the Grosse Ile Free Bridge
Securing $400,000 for lead service line replacements in Gibraltar
Securing $20 million for railroad crossing replacement in Trenton
Securing $10 million for the Downriver Career Technical Consortium
Securing $10 million for the Downriver Utility Wastewater Authority
Passing the Clean Energy and Jobs Act
Restoring workers' rights and prevailing-wage protections
Repealing the retirement tax on Michigan seniors
Expanding the Working Families Tax Credit
Amending the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect LGBTQ+ Michiganders
Repealing Michigan's outdated 1931 abortion ban
Requiring background checks for all firearm purchases
Requiring the safe storage of firearms when children are present
Repealing the mandatory retention law that held back Michigan third graders
Securing $4.7 million for lead service line replacements in Wyandotte
Securing $2 million to rehabilitate Wyandotte's DeSana Arts and Culture Center
Securing $6.5 million to construct a sound wall along I-75 in Southgate
I believe in the power of community. When we work together, we make a difference. I fight fiercely and unapologetically for the people and places I love - and Downriver has my heart. As your State Representative, I will continue working hard every day to make a difference for you and your family.
